Background
- ☠ World War III - the population decreases 1/3.
☠ Samatoki grows up with his parents, and baby sister named Nemu. His father is shitty, abusive - his mother goes on to kill him for what he's put his family through, then kills herself.
☠ Samatoki subsequently becomes a yakuza for Nemu's sake, to ensure that they can continue to survive in what is an unfair world.
☠ Women lead a coup at the end of the AD era, spearheaded by Otome Tohoten, to end the war with hypnosis microphones. They take away weapons from men, and in Japan create the Chuuoku district for their new government (led by women) while the rest of the country is sectioned into divisions. This is the Rule of H era.
☠ A year later in Ikebukuro, Samatoki and Nemu are still together - Samatoki leads a crew named Mad Comic Dialogue, and is still a known member of the yakuza. A rival crew, Stairway 2 Heaven, starts to encroach on their turf to start a territory war. This is caused by a branch of S2H - Naughty Busters, which is where he and Ichiro meet.
We're going to find out how their actual meeting goes like, next month. But they go on to join The Dirty Dawg later, where they make a formidable force with Jakurai and Ramuda. They lead the charge, with Jakurai and Ramuda their support. They're like another family, until they break up - Samatoki says that he won't forgive Ichiro "for Nemu," and they go from being inseparable to loathing one another.
☠ Still a fearsome member of the yakuza, Samatoki puts together a new crew (Mad Trigger Crew) with a dirty cop and an ex-naval officer to participate in the battle for Chuuoku to gain more territory in Yokohama. Buster Bros!!! are their first opponent, where Samatoki and Ichiro meet face-to-face again, but ultimately MTC wins.
Until they go on to face Matenrou, Jakurai's new crew, and find themselves being thoroughly trounced.
Personality
- The fastest way to describe Samatoki on a surface level is by calling him a prickly, prideful Anti-Villain.
Where Ichiro is the Anti-Hero, looking to uphold justice but willing to get his hands dirty to do it, Samatoki is the type of bad guy that has honor and morals. It's appropriate, given that the yakuza are referred to as boryokudan by police (violent groups), or ninkyo dantai by themselves (chivalrous organizations). This is someone who does illegal work, but has standards and limits - he goes barging in to, single-handedly, save a group of women from being trafficked and forced to work at a parlor.
He became a yakuza in the first place to ensure that he and his sister could survive in a world that clearly didn't give a damn about them, considering their upbringing. And he's the type of man who would never raise a hand to a woman because of it, maintaining the respect and admiration for his mother that he had when she was still alive and applying it to the women around him. Despite his bitter, jaded attitude and prickly demeanor, he's... actually pretty loyal and respectful, once these things are earned of him. His mother keeps his respect even after her death, and his loyalty is so ingrained into him that he takes betrayal (perceived or actual) extremely seriously.
And it's certainly obvious, when those moments happen.
Samatoki is angry by default, with a spitfire tongue that's more than happy to shoot off profanity at any given moment. He lashes out with very little provocation, and can easily get stuck bickering with just about anyone. His maturity will decrease exponentially sometimes, though the best evidence is with Ichiro and Juto. (When he and Ichiro aren't at each others' throats, anyways.) But this is usually fine - despite his hair trigger temper, it's just to be expected of him after one gets to know him. He's abrasive, and can come off as crass, and is certainly volatile. That's just Samatoki for you.
But his cold anger is terrifying, and actually dangerous. While admittedly capable of coming off as tranquil, even placid, when in a decent enough mood... when he's legitimately angry, or feels hurt by a betrayal or situation, he goes from hot-headed to cold as steel. His voice lowers, smooths out, going from all bark to a growl promising a bite. And he doesn't hesitate to deliver on the bite.
This is typically because Samatoki cares so much, even if he would never admit to it. He had a shitty upbringing, and lost a lot early on in life. "Life is not fair" is his literal catchphrase, and he sticks to it, because he's continued to lose things over the years. So he plays his cards close to his chest, even as he continues to act on this softer side of himself. He helps women in need. He cares about his sister more than anything else in this world. He cherishes trinkets that carry memories. When he establishes a rapport with someone, he teases them, gives them shit for a lot of things. It makes him kind of a bully, but it's certainly not the worst thing that he's done in his life.
But he does show affection for people! In this way, as well as being kind of tactile with people he's comfortable with. The guy fights all the time, what's a little rough housing every now and then? Or being gentle with his sister, even when they're giving each other a hard time.
And he does all of this with a sense of pride. The guy who calls himself Mr. Hardcore, Yokohama Bad Boy, thinks he's fucking cool - and he's got the swagger to back it up. He admittedly takes himself far more seriously than he should (what a nerd), but he's prideful. It's through sheer capability and badassery that he's made it to where he is today, and Samatoki sure as hell isn't going to let anyone stop him or tell him that he hasn't earned it. After everything he's been through?
Not a chance. The guy's got street-smarts under his belt, and a cleverness that comes from experience more than anything else. He might not be the smartest on the block, and is easy to bait into fights, but he's got what he needs to help him survive and back him up (and support what's important to him).
Powers
- Starting with what can be considered "mundane," Samatoki is a terrifying force to be reckoned with even without his mic. His life has been rough, which has forced him to be rough enough to withstand it as well. He can one-hit KO people with a punch, and straight up roundhouse kicks someone in the face - the latter of which is done when two of his ex-yakuza comrades use counterfeit hypnosis mics, to absolutely no effect on him. He walks through their attacks, completely unfazed, and these are weapons meant to inflict physical and psychological damage on the targets, even when they're "knockoffs."
While full details haven't been revealed about his yakuza dealings, he's had a hand deep in that pie for quite some time now. To the point that he's well-known, and regardless still gets away with his shady dealings due to the connections that he has. It can be assumed that he has all the networking skills and knowledge that comes with the business. It's certainly obvious that he has all the swagger required of his position.
As for his skills as an MC, Samatoki is top class. He and Ichiro were considered the front lines of The Dirty Dawg (so the DPS, to Jakurai and Ramuda's support), which was seen as one of the Best groups to hit the divisions of Japan, and his attacks are just as hard hitting as his fists. And the speaker that manifests when he's using his mic can certainly instill some unease - couple that with the lethal lyrics and biting style that Samatoki uses, and it's obvious that he's not all bark. He's an awful lot of bite. (A style that only gets better and better as his voice actor, Shintaro Asanuma, gets more practice at his role.)

- Back at home, Samatoki has been a member of the yakuza for quite some time now - to the point that he's referred to as "the Godfather" in one of the series' recent songs, and is known in many circles as someone to look out for. In a world where guns and other weapons have effectively been outlawed by the women-run government, he still manages to make a living in the shady side of things (although, again, the one thing he seems the most against is human trafficking), and has an in with the Yokohama Police that allows him to get out of trouble.
But in more specific terms, Samatoki's skillset allows for:
